Hey Guardians,
The past few weeks have been a whirlwind for all of us who hold Bungie close to our hearts. With the unexpected layoffs at the studio, the Destiny community has been left in a state of shock and reflection. It's during these trying times that I felt the need to look back and cherish the moments that made us fall in love with the game.
With a little inspiration from some friends on my Discord server, I created this little sniper montage as a love letter to some of my favorite PvP shots, put to the intro of Persona 3 FES. Hence, "Maxima."
In light of recent events, it just felt right to reminisce about the good times. The thrill of landing that perfect headshot, the camaraderie among fireteam members, and reminiscing about the simple joy of playing D2. After all the crazy news about some of the most iconic figureheads of not just Destiny, but of Bungie as a whole being let go, I wanted to create a snapshot into this window of time when we all just enjoyed the game.
To the talented individuals at Bungie who've been affected by the layoffs, know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed. The countless hours you've poured into creating this universe have given us memories that will last a lifetime. This montage is a small token of appreciation for everything you've done.
The decisions made by Bungie's leadership recently have not only affected the talented individuals behind the game but also the dedicated community that has built around it. It's a sad reminder of the delicate balance between business necessities and the human element that is so often at the heart of game development. The sadness we feel for those affected is profound, and I think a reevaluation of the future of Bungie and my stake in Destiny 2 is seriously pulled into question.
Despite the high-selling numbers of Lightfall, there was a huge dropoff in player engagement as the seasons went on. More and more of the interesting armor sets were relegated to the Eververse Store (the for-real-money cosmetic shop). I have so many personal anecdotes of listening to random fireteam members complaining about "Man, I wish X armor set wasn't in Eververse." Once upon a time, Destiny had unique armors tied to strikes. Now, one has to purchase the newest season pass in order to get a unique exotic and a new set of armor. All these decisions were made by people whose risks did not pay off, which resulted in the punishment of the devs who made it all happen. No wonder there's a huge loss in player trust. It's going to take content that is more impactful than The Taken King, Forsaken, and Witch Queen expansions combined. Luckily, the world is vast, and there's plenty of games out there to experience.
Destiny 2 has been more than just a game for many of us. It's been a journey, an experience, and a source of countless memories. Through this montage, I hope to capture a fraction of the magic that Bungie has created. Here's to the past, the present, and a better future!
See ya Starside.
